Volume Trixx #1

Do you see all the ladies running around with big voluminous hair and wonder 'were they born with it?' Let me say that many of these gals do NOT have lots of natural volume (with the exception of curly girls). But rather they have learned the tricks of getting volume!

Dry out your roots. Damage your roots. Rough 'em up. This opens the hair cuticles and prevents the hairs from laying smoothly on each other. Ever noticed that your hair feels more voluminous right after getting highlights? Its because in order to pull color out of hair the chemicals have to open the cuticle. Most volumizers work in a similar way, in that they are designed to 'dry out' your hair in order to create more texture.

Picking a Volumizing Product. Read the product container carefully. Stronger products that contain hold are great for holding the root straight off the head (most hair grows and lays flat to the head) but will create weight if used further down the hair shaft. Lighter products can be used from roots through the mid shaft and will create dry, 'floating' hair with little hold, but will not usually keep the roots lifted.

Smooth moisturized hair cuticle. Dry, texturized, hair cuticle.

Volume Trixx #2

Keep your mid-shaft and end moisturized. Dry, damaged ends act like Velcro locking onto each other. The more hairs that lock together, the more the hair is weighted and pulled down. Hair also needs moisture in order to change shape. Moisturized hair will quickly respond to the heat and hold the shape longer.

Picking Good Products.
As always I encourage using natural products. A gentle daily cleanser, or a volumizing shampoo would be where I would start. Deep cleansing shampoos are fine if only used once every few washes but avoid if you have color in your hair as they usually pull color. Generally the matching conditioner in a set is the best choice because they are chemically designer to go together.

Using a good shampoo and conditioner and still have dry ends? Try a light leave in: conditioner, oil treatment, repair cream, or moisture spray, on the ends. This will further prevent the ends from grabbing each other and will allow for flowing strands. One of my new favorites is Unite 7Seconds Conditon becuse it works as a detangler, gentle moisturizer, UV protector and heat protector all in one!

I'm Gonna Be Relaxin'...

To all my clients:

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that I will be off November 20th - 27th over the Thanksgiving Holiday Week.

To help fit everyone in around the Holiday, I will be working (in addition to my normals days) Wednesday November 17th and Wednesday December 1st.

See you soon and have a great Fall!
~Liza

Perm-a-ment Change

A Perm is a strong chemical process that breaks down the bonds of the hair and then re-sets them in a new form. The end result can be bouncy curls if done right or fried frazzled limp strands if done wrong. Thus this service should only be done by someone that regularly gives perms and has ample experience in what kind of perm will work best on your hair. For this reason I have decided to stop offering perms since I do so few. For any of my clients interested in a perm I am referring that service to Kathleen here at Solace Salon. She will be better able to answer your perm questions and give you the results you are looking for. Thanks! ~Liza

Hot Brunnette Colors for Fall / Winter 2010

As for brunettes Sofia Vergara has been one of the most influential women in Hollywood this year. Rich Dark Chocolate Browns with Warm Auburn highlights give the hair dimension and appearance of high shine. The tiny bit of red seen in the highlights is a leftover from this summers hot red color and is great because it warms up most skin tones, giving its wearers a nice glow.

Hot Blond Hair for Fall / Winter 2010

Lots of Cinnamon & Copper foils this year! And as always Jennifer Aniston does it beautifully with numerous small foils of medium and dark blond shades. This popular color warms up skin tones giving skin a more youthful appearance. And unlike platinum blond it takes the focus off wrinkles and skin imperfections and rather helps puts the focus on the eyes. Probably why its one of Hollywoods favorite haircolors!
