Tips on Salons, Stylist, and Haircuts

Finding a New Salon

- Look up salons on-line and check out reviews. No salon has perfect reviews but you should be able to get a good feel what is good about the salon and maybe what they need to work on.

- Sometimes you just have to wander in and check the salon out to see if its your style. You don't have to buy anything, just ask for a price list and chat with the front desk. If the salon is clean and organized, your stylist has likely been trained on being clean and organized in there work. If you feel like the front desk receptionist is a snooty brat then go somewhere else.

Finding a New Stylist

-When researching salon reviews online keep an eye open for stylist that regularly get great reviews. And pay attention as to why they get great reviews.

-When trying out a new salon always ask for someone that has been doing hair for at least a year. A stylist learns so much there first year out on the job but you don't need to be the guinea pig they learn it on.

-When scheduling a service with a new stylist ask to schedule a consultation prior to the service. This ensures that the stylist has plenty of time to really look at you, your hair, and isn't in a rush because of a previous late client.

- If you have curly hair ask for a stylist that also has curly or wavy hair OR has had training on cutting and styling waves and curls.

Finding a New Haircut

- When looking at pictures and people take a close look at what the bangs and face framing looks like. How heavy is it? How long is it? How far over is the part? All these things can make a big difference in the overall look.

- If you have straight hair then skip photos of women with waves - unless your willing to curl your hair. And if you have curly hair skip pictures of women with straight hair unless your willing to straighten.

-And lastly if you see someone with the exact cut you would love to have, go ask where they get there hair done, and by whom. You can even ask to ask to take their picture! Trust me most women will be in heaven if you ask to take their picture because you love their hair. Wouldn't you be?

Going Back to the Corporate World

After much debating, agonizing, and calculating I've decided to go back to the corporate world. More specifically, Erik's Bike Shop's. Starting February 21, 2011 I will be assisting in the Merchandising of their 17 stores, and helping prepare for future store openings.

I will continue to operate at Solace Salon, through March 19th on a part-time basis. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at hairfixx4u@yahoo.com. If you would like to have your color formula please send me an email with your full name and I will give you any and all details on what we've been doing with your color formula over the past six months. (please let me know if you want any formulas farther back than six months.)

It has been a pleasure doing business with you. I will miss many of you and your stories more than you'll ever know!

Best Salon for Weddings and Updos

A wedding is an all day event that can either begin with smiles and happiness or stress and tears.

For this reason I recommend Juut Salon/Spa for wedding parties. Its where I would go if I was getting married, again.

The stylist here are highly trained to make your hair look amazing for your big day. The nail techs are actually excited to see you and the make-up artist will bring out your features beautifully. And best of all your wedding group (bride, bridesmaids, mothers, friends, photographer and some times

even fathers!) can all relax in the salons separate area (designed for groups) while everyone takes turned getting done up. You can even bring food and drinks for everyone (or have them delivered) so that everyone can stay together, relax with a mimosa and nibble on snacks.

Its a great way to start your special day!

Learn To Do Your Hair

Ever wish you could take classes to learn how to style your own hair? Or learn tips that the pros use on their clients for that added touch that makes all the difference?

Well you can and its free! In fact its the same way that many stylist learn their tricks of the trade. And you can learn how to do almost any type of style that you can think of!

How? Go online, go to google.com or youtube.com and type in whatever you are wanting to learn about.

As an example I went to Google, searched: round brush blowout, and then clicked 'videos' in the top left corner.

Just because your not a stylist doesn't mean you can't do your hair like one!

My All Time Favorite Products After 5 Years of Hair

Hard to believe five years has already gone by...

But after trying hundreds of products I can say that a few have stood out as winners. Here are my picks for best products (and whats sitting on my counter at home):

1) Moroccanoil - blow-dry this into your hair for hair that dries faster, shinier, and silkier than ever before. Seriously, put enough of this in dry hair and it can cut drying time in half!

2) DivaCurl Heaven In Hair Mask - Instant bounce in limp hair. Astounding difference in almost every head of hair I used it on. Should be a Minnesota winter must have item!

3) Dry Shampoo - (see older post for ratings and differences) Finally a way to skip blow-drying my hair every single morning. And finally a way to look like I have a full head of hair! I love you dry shampoo. And now I finally love my thin, fine hair.

4) Aveda's Universal Styling Creme - When nothing else will work to make rough fuzzy strands smooth and shinny I pull out this masterpiece. And suddenly the strands have no choice but to behave. Great for blowouts on any hair or scrunching into damp curls.

5) Aveda's Pure Abundance Hair Spray - Its the only hairspray I've ever used that will hold backcombing for 24hours but brushes out without breaking a hair. Great for holding even bangs all day long without feeling like your hair is being turned into baked straw that you don't dare touch. Now if my husband would just stop borrowing it! Even he loves it.

6) Best Smoothing Shampoo / Conditioner - Tie: UNITE Eurotherapy Smoothing - works so good you just might be able to get rid of those other smoothing products you've been using. Aveda Smooth Infusion - a savior for anyone that uses a flat iron regularly. Does such wonders that I can tell immediately when clients stop using it. Because no other shampoo/ conditioner tames and smooths ironed hair like this stuff!

Well there you go. The standouts out of hundreds of products. =D

Biggest Hair Mistake Minnesotans Make

No matter if your hair is curly or straight, short or long, everyone wants hair that shines like the hair is this photo, right? Shiny hair is a sign of good health and youth!

And every winter Minnesotans increase their moisturizer everywhere - except in one very important place - their hair! As soon as your hands, lips and face start feeling dry in the fall, its time to switch from your summer shampoo & conditioner over to a low-chemical (chemicals dry hair out), moisturizing, shampoo and conditioner. Your hair and scalp need twice as much moisture in the winter than they do in the summer. Even fine hair.

Excellent brands can be found at even Target, such as: Burts Bees, Giovanni, Yes to Carrots, Organix and Nature's Gate. For the best bang for your buck check out Mississippi Market or Whole Foods great selections of natural moisturizing products at amazingly affordable prices (some are only $10 for a whole liter!)

So if your fuzzy, dull, limp or tangly now you know what to do. No more excuses Minnesota ladies!

A New Favorite

As I've mentioned before I'm trying as many Dry Shampoo's as possible to give everyone a heads up on what brands work and what ones to pass on.

BROCATO's Big Easy Volumizing Dry Shampoo gets a thumbs up from me. Works wonderfully to make hair feel clean and lifted without actually feeling like there is anything in your hair!
